Hanshi Jay Purdy
December 25, 1944 - September 27, 2021

After a life full of love, laughter, music, and karate, it is with great sadness that the family and friends of Jay Purdy announce his passing on September 27, 2021. He passed away peacefully in Ottawa, Ontario, surrounded by his loved ones in his 77th year.

Beloved partner of Brenda Motyl (Julia and Vanessa), cherished father of Blair (Pip Dwyer) and Ryan (Elena Jiminez Gomez); loving grandfather of Amelia, Ella, and Jake; survived by his dear sister Sandra Purdy, Jay Purdy will be truly missed by many extended family and friends.

Whether it was with trumpet or drums - around a campfire with friends, or on stage with Jazz ‘greats’… or whether he was teaching karate to advanced karate Instructors, or new junior students, he gave his all to each person. Jay had a great impact on those he met and was a blessing to so many.

In his life roles as father, grandfather, partner, friend, brother, musician, Sensei, he was steadfast in his care and concern for others. Without a doubt, Jay Purdy’s influence and impact on the martial arts world has been immeasurable over the past 55 years. He will be greatly missed by his Canadian Naha Te Goju Ryu Karate family.

Jay Purdy has taught us about lifelong commitment, joy in the details, and perseverance. We will also cherish his clever wit and sense of humour; he had an uncanny ability to find happiness in his daily activities. He has left a legacy for all of us, encouraging us each to live life to the fullest. For those who were honoured to share the path with Hanshi Jay Purdy, he will be greatly missed.
